I was fortunate to visit Kamdhenu Gaushala in Bhavnagar last week. It was a truly memorable experience that radiates care, compassion, and commitment to gaumata welfare. Situated near Meldima Temple on Old Port Road, the gaushala serves as a beacon of hope for sick, destitute, and injured cows in the region. Managed by the Om Shiv Kamdhenu Gaushala Charitable Trust, it has grown from humble beginnings to become a safe haven with modern shelters, medical care, and the dedicated service of volunteers who work tirelessly for the well-being of the cattle.
The Heart of True Gauseva

During the visit, I met Shri Chetan bhai, a dedicated gau sevak and witnessed the powerful bond between humans and gaumata that is fostered within the gaushala. The atmosphere is calm and uplifting, filled with the gentle sounds of gaumata and bachda (calves) settling comfortably in their sheds. Each Gaumata receives specialized care, including nutritious food, timely medical attention, and lots of affection. It’s inspiring to see the team of volunteers and caretakers working round the clock, ensuring these gentle creatures recover and thrive.
Community Impact and Education

Kamdhenu Gaushala is not just a shelter—it is also an educational center that informs visitors about the importance of Gau protection, breeding, and the cultural significance of the cow in Indian tradition. The gaushala runs awareness programs that highlight the environmental and health benefits of pure dairy products and organic offerings made at the facility. Their commitment to sustainability and compassion sets a wonderful example for the entire Bhavnagar community.
Breed Conservation

I could see the Original Gir breed gaumata and khutt (Bulls) reared in Gaushala itself. They have maintained the pedigree of each Gaumata for reference. One feels proud on seeing them that such a small place is able to do such a great work of preserving the Gir breed for future generations to see and witness them. All the Gausevaks in the gaushala were ready to know and learn how to improve the work in there and what additional things can be done to make gaushala self-sustainable.
Reflections From the Visit
Experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the gaushala leaves a lasting impression on every visitor. It evokes a deep sense of gratitude for the tireless work being done and the impact it has, not just on the cows but on society at large. Supporting and volunteering for Kamdhenu Gaushala is a meaningful way to give back, experience the joy of service, and further the cause of animal welfare in Bhavnagar. A visit here is more than just an outing—it is a lesson in compassion and a reminder of why communities like Kamdhenu Gaushala deserve encouragement and support.
